The Structural Laboratory Objectives and plans
The Amirkabir University of Technology, as one of the most important scientific and academic centers in the field of engineering sciences and one of the executors of the growth and development of research activities in this field, has been planning to expand the technical and engineering laboratories. In this regard, equipping and setting up the National Structural Laboratory in line with the points raised and raising the quality of civil engineering in the country is part of the above planning. National Structural Laboratory of Amirkabir University of Engineering Faculty of Civil Engineering as the executive arm of the country's Scientific Improvement Pole, which is responsible for planning and conducting research activities at Amirkabir University. By providing the most advanced equipment for dynamic testing of structures, it intends to soon provide static and dynamic tests on various models of different scales.

National Laboratory of Structures in Modern Technology
In the year 2004, the Earthquake Engineering Simulation Network project was presented by universities and research centers in technology-rich countries. This named the NEES (Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation).
To develop research on earthquake engineering and structural dynamics as well as to better understand its effects on vital arteries, they have developed a unit management as well as expanding the relationship between different structural and geotechnical laboratories over a 10-year to 2014. The project, which runs simultaneously at most universities in the US, Japan, England, and France, allows for the testing of large, complex structures that could not previously be performed in any laboratory alone. In this design, using the Internet network, it is possible to test different parts of a large structure in different laboratories around the world. Therefore, this design has been used in this laboratory, too.

Laboratory location
Structural laboratory space of approximately 600 square meters consists of three separate sections:
  1. The main laboratory space is 30 meters by 12 meters and has a height of 9 meters with independent entrance and can enter and exit large samples and materials. In this space are dynamic loading devices, hard flooring, and the loading frame.
  2. Side space with 9m x 11m dimensions and a height of 4 meters has an independent north entrance and can carry small equipment and materials. Part of this space is used to store materials. Besides, this space can be used for educational classes.
  3. Office, monitor, and test control spaces are approximately 48 square meters in size and include three separate rooms that allow for the monitoring of various experiments, the activities of laboratory personnel and the maintenance of various documents.

Laboratory equipment
Laboratory equipment and facilities can be divided into three separate groups:
  1. Infrastructure facilities
  2. Loading equipment
  3. Measuring tools
  • Infrastructure facilities
  1. The hard floor, which is a massive concrete foundation, is designed to transmit dynamic loads applied to the frame system to the ground as well as to protect the surrounding structures from dynamic loading test vibrations. The dimensions of a foundation are 12 meters by 5 meters and average depth is 2 meters.
  2. The loading frame has a vertical load-bearing capacity of 100 tons and a horizontal load of 20 to 100 tons depending on the load level. This frame allows for loading on real-life samples. It occupies a height of 6 meters and a space of 3.5 meters by 10 meters on the hard floor.
  3. Movable crane in three directions with the 10-ton capacity to transport heavy specimens.
  4. High voltage power system
  5. Ventilation, thermal and cooling system
  • Loading equipment
The details of this section are detailed in the appendix, which is summarized below:
  1. A hydraulic servo jack capable of reproducing dynamic force 870 KN and static force 1084 KN.
  2. Two hydraulic servo jack capable of reproducing dynamic force 435 KN and static force 542KN.
  3. A hydraulic servo jack capable of reproducing dynamic force 87 KN and static force 108 KN.
  4. Hydraulic Pressure Generating Machine to supply pressure for the above mentioned loading jacks.
  5. Shank hydraulic loading device with a static loading capacity of 570 KN and 700 mm range of motion for testing small specimens.

Welding, welding inspection and quality control workshop

As we know, the discipline of civil engineering is distinct from other disciplines because the student has the opportunity to experience closely what he or she is learning in theory. In this regard, welding technology is one of the most important issues of supervision, which is one of the major responsibilities of civil engineering. For this purpose, the welding technology workshop includes a variety of welding methods, destructive and non-destructive tests, seen in the welding workshop of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, which is offered to undergraduate students.

Appendix A: Laboratory Equipment and Records
Servo Test Hydraulic Loading Machine It can perform Uniform, Cyclic and Combined Load Testing on various structural elements including frames, beams, columns, shear walls, etc., as well as joints. The jack has a capacity of 100 to 600 KN

Schenk hydraulic loading machine It has a static loading capacity of up to 600 KN and a motion range of 700 mm and is used for testing small specimens (reinforcement, plate, screw, and cable, etc.).

Automatic reinforcement bar bender machine CTO This machine is used for our standard bending and rebending tests of all types of reinforcement.

Creep test device This machine is used for permanent creep testing of concrete creep.

STM loading device It has the same functionality as the Schenck machine and is used for fine precision specimens.
Other equipment in the lab include impact testing equipment, relocation facilities such as LVDT and Strain Gage, static and dynamic data recording facilities.
